Unexpected Encounters
George Kirk's son had enlisted in Starfleet. Spock had yet to actually see the man for himself and there was no Kirk on his student list but he knew Kirk was there. It was hard not too when he was bombarded by the fact everywhere he went.In the teacher's lounge it was all anyone was speaking about. It seems that James T. Kirk was every bit as intelligent as his father was. Apparently his test scores were in the very high percentile and according to young Kirk's advisor the boy hadn't even really been doing his best.
During his classes it seemed to be the only thing his students wished to speak about rather than the fungi of the fourth moon of the Dramic system's main planet. They were very respectful to Spock as a teacher but it was as if they just couldn't help themselves. They just had to speak about the rather charming, charismatic James Kirk. It sounded as if he was the type that just drew people's attention with little to no effort at all and he loved the attention.
Spock's intrigue was perked with the news of George Kirk's son but after his sensitive hearing was bombarded by the rumors, the gossip and just all around chatter about him he was almost glad that there was no James T. Kirk on his student list. Though it would be interesting meeting him, Spock was not about to rush to the window like some of his students did whenever the man walked by on the sidewalk below. It was almost like a celebrity had descended on the academy and the admiration had yet to fade from everyone.
There were four years for everyone to gap at Cadet Kirk, Spock's test was tomorrow and it seemed as if from the answers he was receiving for his questions during the lecture that over half his class was going to fail it. If there was one thing Spock couldn't tolerate was failure. His own teachers on Vulcan certainly never tolerated it, especially from the half-breed.
But Spock's class was over ninety percent human so Spock knew he couldn't hold them to the standards he himself had been held accountable for. However failing a test due to gossip about one new recruit was pushing it and Spock wondered absently if he should add another firewall to his teacher's computer to prevent hacking for the answer key. It was this lack of focus that nearly had him running into a student's back. Only the knowledge that his personal bubble of space had been invaded allowed Spock to stop in time.
"Oh hey, a teacher! Great timing!" The young man chirped as he turned around and took in Spock's black teaching uniform. Blue, blue eyes instantly locked onto Spock's ears before the gaze shifted to his eyes, surprise already in their depths.
Spock resisted the urge to frown just as he did all the other times a person looked at his ears before looking him in the face. Yes, he was Vulcan. That in no way mattered when there were other more exotic aliens on campus. However it seemed that whenever Spock met anyone new the first thing they looked at was his ears and only after their curiosity was sated would they look at his face. "You needed assistance?" Spock asked after a moment of silence.
The cadet's eyes widened momentarily before a large grin broke out over the young man's face. "Yeah! I was wondering if you could tell me where the medical building was located? I thought this was it but…" the man trailed off with a helpless shrug.
"Medical? Are you injured?" Spock inquired as he looked the cadet from head to toe. He certainly didn't look injured in any way. In fact, he was what Spock would deem a prime specimen of humanity. Not too thin, not too fat and accurately proportioned.
"Nah," the man shook his head. "Looking for a friend there. He's a doctor."
"This is the science building," Spock answered him. "The medic building is three down."
The man sighed. "Figures. You would think they would make the buildings look somewhat different. Or at least hang a sign or something."
"There should have been a map supplied with your hand book," Spock stated firmly though he knew it was pointless. Most students never bothered looking at the handbook let alone the map.
"Yeah, I should get that out," the student muttered predictably. "Well, I shouldn't hold you up any longer. See ya around."
Spock nodded once sharply as the man jogged off towards the medical building. His back was just as trim as his front had been and Spock had to shake his head slightly to jerk himself back to reality. Perhaps he should set aside some extra time for more mediation. It seemed as if his focus had been just as lacking as his students.
It was a month into the new semester and Spock still couldn't seem to get James T. Kirk out of his mind. The gossip mills had yet to die down and like Spock had predicted, there had been attempts to hack into his computer and when they were unsuccessful over half the class had failed. James T. Kirk was a complete disruption to the order of his class and the man wasn't even in his course.
Kirk wasn't the only new cadet on Spock's mind however. The image of blue eyes and an easy grin it seemed did not want to leave his mind. No matter how hard or how long he tried to focus on his work the image was always there floating in the back of his mind.
Spock sighed as he left the science building intent on getting back to his apartment to spend a good amount of the evening in meditation but it seemed as if fate was intent on throwing things at him. Or rather flying at him as a sudden flurry of papers flew by him, propelled by the wind. It almost took Spock a full three seconds to fully comprehend what it was that he was seeing. Papers were hardly used anywhere anymore, replaced by data chips decades before.
Spock reached out and grabbed a few of the fluttering pieces of papers as more tried to fly by him and he turned to retrieve a few more pieces. A quick glance at them answered the question about why paper could be found on campus as the multitude of medical terminology registered in his mind. The medical building was one of the few that still had most documents hand written.
It was then that he heard the swearing behind him. Turning he saw a man in a red cadet uniform chasing after even more papers being scattered by the wind and being rather unsuccessful if the multitude of angry growling was anything to go by. Unlike the student he had met previously this student was older. Not like the usual bright-eyed eager young men and woman that usually enrolled.
If he was a medic however it was understandable considering one would have to attend an actual medical school before entering Starfleet academy. However this gentleman was even older than those students and clearly had both seen and lived life and not necessarily an easy one. Spock wondered briefly why it was that he would enroll so late in life. Space travel was not necessarily easy on the human body no matter how advance the technology got. There was just something about it that tended to assault the delicate human senses.
Spock set his assorted padds down on a nearby bench and began to collect the scattered pages. It took a while before each white rectangle was retrieved and the cadet quickly made his way towards Spock's side. Spock straightened as hazel eyes met his own dark ones.
"Thanks," the other man nodded and reached out to take the papers. When Spock automatically pulled back slightly the hazel eyes flickered to Spock's ears and understanding dawned in the man's eyes and he instantly pulled his hand back.
"It is quite all right doctor," Spock replied as he held out the papers for the man.
Surprise lit up the man's face. "How'd you know I was a doctor?" he demanded and Spock frowned as he instantly tried to place the accent he was hearing in the man's deep voice.
"Your papers are of a medicinal nature," he replied as he held out the papers once again.
The man frowned but took the papers this time. Spock was surprised himself at the care the man took not to physically touch him but the close proximity of their hands in that brief moment that they both held the sheets was enough to send a tingle running up Spock's arm and down his spine. Spock quickly pulled his hand back and clasped them behind his back.
The doctor quickly took note and stepped back slightly. "Well thanks anyway," he spoke. "I'm late meeting up with a friend and most people would have walked right by me."
"I am not most people," Spock instantly replied and the hazel eyes went to his ears again.
"No, your not." Spock frowned slightly but the man quickly shuffled his papers and shoved them in the bag that was strapped over his shoulder before glancing at his watch. Another curse left the man's lips. "I'm really late now," he huffed before looking back up at Spock. "Thanks again sir."
"It is not necessary-" Spock began but the man had already turned and was jogging down the path on his way to his prior appointment. It was the second time Spock found himself appreciating someone's exit. It wasn't until he was home that he realized that he had left his padds on the bench in front of the science building and if he wanted to grade his student's essays before the next morning he would have to retrieve them. Suppressing a groan, Spock retrieved his keycard and headed out once again.
One would think two months would be plenty of time for the gossip mill to slow somewhat but apparently that was not so when it came to James T. Kirk. His class was still chatting about the man. Spock wouldn't have cared in the least if they were doing during their own time but most it seemed wanted to discuss it during Spock's lecture. It almost made him wish he could kick the students out who blathered on but Spock refused to take any of his own precious time away from what he had been hired to do. Teach. The "F" key on his computer keyboard however could use the rest by now after nearly eight weeks of repetitive pressing.
When he wasn't flunking his students or trying to avoid the avid discussions of Cadet Kirk he was thinking about another cadet all together; two cadets actually. And that fact more than any other was what refused to fall into a nice orderly train of thought. It confused Spock more than he would like to admit but two sets of eyes refused to leave his mind and tended to creep up at the most inopportune times. It was most awkward to try and explain to his father why he had stopped speaking in a middle of a sentence when he had called home to wish his mother a happy birthday and had not continued speaking for almost three point seven minutes.
Spock wondered how it was possible to meet two such prime specimens of humanity in one year let alone within weeks of each other. Both cadets just had such a presence that seemed to penetrate Spock's shields right down to his core. It was strange that after so long in the Starfleet academy first as a student himself and now as a teacher he would meet two people, humans at that, who's aura called out to his.
Spock could not figure out why it was that he could not get the two men out of his mind. Considering that humans were practically psi-null, it was baffling why he could feel such a press against his shields. Especially since he never once touched either one of them.
Spock suppressed the urge to sigh as he left his office and began the walk back to the housing complex. Why they were on the other side of campus so far from the science building was anyone's guess but Spock appreciated the exercise. It allowed him to star gaze, as it was that late by the time he managed to get away from the experiments he had most students doing for extra credit; a class that had almost tripled in the past few weeks.
"-but you have to admit it Bones! He's very intriguing! I mean, a Vulcan here on campus!"
Spock quickly ducked behind a tree before he was spotted. He waited a few second before he glanced around the trunk he was behind. It was a dark night but his vision just like his hearing was much better than a humans and that was probably the only reason the two men hadn't seen him as of yet.
Spock's eyes widened as he spotted the two men that had been intruding upon his thoughts more and more frequently. The doctor was seated on a bench some yards away while the younger man was pacing in front of him waving his arms somewhat sporadically. It was he who had spoken; the doctor was watching him with a raised eyebrow.
"You can't possibly be thinking what I know you're thinking," the doctor, "bones" said. Such a strange nickname, Spock truly doubted that it was the man's real name.
"Oh come on! You have to admit that it presents quite a challenge!" the younger one said.
"And we all know how much you love a challenge," the doctor chuckled.
"Did you know he's a full member of Starfleet?" the younger chirped excitedly. "Not just as a teacher but he's actually a First Lieutenant?"
"You're kidding," the doctor, for Spock really couldn't think of him as "bones", gasped. "What the heck is he doing here? I thought the desire for science kept them in that thrice damned academy of theirs."
"That's the best part! He refused them!" the younger grinned.
The doctor's jaw dropped and Spock almost wished to do the same. How had he known that little fact? No one really knew that. The only place he could think of was-
"You hacked the academy's personnel databanks didn't you?" the doctor said accusingly.
"Wouldn't you?" the younger chuckled. "Come on! You're interested. I can tell."
"Am not," the doctor said gruffly but Spock could detect the hint of curiosity in his voice. "So now what?"
"Now comes the planning on how to meet up with him again!" the blond man laughed. "It almost makes me whish I went into the advance sciences instead of the regular course."
"Only you would fail a placement test on purpose," the doctor shook his head.
"Yeah but if I knew how drop dead gorgeous the teacher was I would have so been in there in a heartbeat!" the man laughed. "This is going to be fun!"
"Do you really think you can even get him interested in you? Let alone go on a date with you?" the doctor frowned.
"You don't think I could do it?" the younger man frowned at his companion before a slow grin crept over his face. "Or is it you don't want the competition?"
"Don't be absurd," the doctor huffed quickly. Almost too quickly.
"Oh admit it. You all but told me you thought he was gorgeous too when you met up with me that day after you met him."
"He helped me collect my documents, that's all." Even Spock could hear the small waver in his voice.
"You so want to nibble on his ears too!" the younger man accused.
"Do not."
"Do too."
"Do not."
"Do too!" the other cadet laughed. "Tell you what, let's make it interesting!"
"Oh?" the doctor's interest was piqued, as was Spock's. "What do you have in mind?"
"If I get a date with him before the end of the school year, you owe me a case of scotch!" the younger grinned.
"Oh? And if I get a date with him?"
"Ah hah! I knew you were interested in him!"
"I admit no such thing, now what do I get if I get a date with him first?"
"My undying worship?" the younger grinned. "But if not that then a case of bourbon! That really expensive one you like."
Spock slipped away just as he heard the doctor's acquisition to the wager, his mind whirling with chaotic thoughts. First was the shock that they seemed just as interested in him as he was of them. Second, he wondered what they would do when he led them on a merry chase before winning the wager in full by asking them both out once the summer vacation officially stared. It wouldn't do for him to date students during the school year after all. At least he'll finally learn their names.
It was going to be an interesting next few months and Spock was going to start planning once he finished grading the latest batch of tests. Pulling up the first student's answer file he began reading. He nearly groaned as he read the answer to number twelve. "The average life span of a Tribble is: Jim Kirk."
Spock completely blamed his human side for the sudden inexplicable urge to want to pull his hair out.
~Why do I have a feeling I'm going to have people wanting more to this one? XD
